Are Asynchronous Classes Right For You?

Answer The 5 Questions Below to Find Out Now!

Answer the five bolded questions below on a scale of one (1) to five (5). Five (5) is the highest possible answer and indicates you fully agree with the question. A one (1) indicates you do not agree or do not feel like the item is your strongest suit.

#1 Academic Preparedness: Are you academically prepared for the class you consider taking?

    • What Does the question mean? A good indicator could be a prerequisite class was taken with an A or B. If you are unsure, take an assessment with Legend College Preparatory to find out if you have the necessary academic skills.

#2 Priority of the Class: How important is successfully completing this course in your learning plan?

    • Are you able to mark it on your calendar among other activities and events? It does not have to be weekly, but it needs to be there with some regular frequency.

#3 Work Habit A – Time Management: Currently, how often do you track the progress of a long-term assignment?

    • Very often, often, sometime, seldom, or never?

#4 Do you have a system to keep track of (to store/file) your assignments/work? How effective is the system?

    • For example, are you able to locate assignments in the current semester within 10 minutes

#5 Work Habit C – Resourcefulness: When you encounter problems, how proactive are you in finding ways to resolve them and/or people to assist

    • For example, when you don’t fully understand the expectations of an assignment, would you initiate to find out from your teacher?

If you score a total of 20 out of 25, there is a good chance you will succeed in completing an asynchronous class with your desired grade. Scores lower than 18 should take synchronous courses until you are more prepared.

If you score 3 or lower in academic preparedness, we recommend that you would add tutoring to fill the academic gaps before starting the class. On the other hand, if your work habit is the roadblock, add a few scheduled periodic meetings (For example, an hour biweekly or once a month with a 2-hour block) with the teacher in addition to the async course. This blended learning model would increase the chances of success.

Asynchronous Courses FAQ

Q: What is the difference between asynchronous and synchronous classes?

Asynchronous classes are designed to offer an “anywhere-anytime” option to proactive learners. They are mostly self-directed and self-paced, however, a teacher is available to help every step of the way. Since there are no live lectures, students do not need to set aside a designated time for class each week.

Synchronous classes are instructor-led courses with live lectures via video conferencing. Students are expected to attend these meetings during the designated class schedule.

Q: Can I switch from an asynchronous class to a synchronous class if the format is not working for me?

Yes. If the synchronous class is available. Synchronous fees will apply. Students are responsible for catching up with the synchronous class if necessary. Last day to request a switch of the format for the 2021-2022 Fall-Spring session is October 14th, 2021.

Q: Can I switch from a synchronous class to an asynchronous class if the format is not working for me?
Yes. If the asynchronous class is available. Please note there are no refunds for switching class formats. Last day to request a switch of the format for the 2021-2022 Fall-Spring session is October 14th, 2021.

Q:What if my student has questions about the material?
Students are always highly encouraged to reach out to their instructors for help via email or to schedule a meeting during the instructor’s office hours. Students can expect to hear back from instructors within 48 hours with answers to their questions.

Q: How are students’ progress monitored?
Instructors provide students with tentative milestones to complete throughout the school year. Once the student agrees to the pace plan, the class instructor will follow up periodically with progress reports. Parents will be notified if a student starts falling behind from the agreed initial pace plan.

Q: How can students stay on track of their goals if they have prior commitments during a certain time (days/weeks)?
Teachers will provide a pace plan to follow throughout the school year session. Students need to inform their class instructor of any commitments that will hinder their availability to complete their work by a desired deadline to develop a new pace plan that works around their commitments.
