Independent Study+

Structured AP Study. Accredited Course Credit. Flexible Support.

Legend College Preparatory’s Independent Study+ Program is designed for motivated students preparing independently for an AP exam who would benefit from a complete asynchronous curriculum, structured pacing, teacher support, progress monitoring, AP Classroom resources, and the opportunity to earn transcripted AP course credit.

Students may take the AP exam at Legend’s Cupertino testing location, at their regular school, or at another authorized AP testing location. The program is available to local, out-of-area, and homeschool students.

Important: Program Enrollment and AP Exam Registration Are Separate

Enrolling in Independent Study+ does not register the student for an AP exam or reserve an exam seat.

  • Independent Study+ enrollment provides curriculum, academic support, AP Classroom course-section access, progress monitoring, and eligibility to earn transcripted course credit.
  • AP exam registration must be completed separately with Legend or another authorized AP testing school.
  • Students wishing to test at Legend should register early. Exam seats are limited and may fill before the published registration deadline.
  • An exam seat at Legend is confirmed only after the separate AP Exam Registration Form and payment have been successfully completed.

  • Local, out-of-area, and homeschool students who will arrange an AP testing location separately
  • Students who have earned a B or higher in the prerequisite course or otherwise demonstrate readiness

Learning Support for Strong Performance

Independent Study+ combines the flexibility of asynchronous learning with the structure expected of an accredited course. Students receive a personalized pacing guide, complete assignments and assessments, communicate with a subject teacher, and participate in regular progress monitoring. Parents receive visibility into the student’s progress throughout the course.

Content and Exam Preparation

  • Comprehensive Coverage: Unit-by-unit instruction aligned with the current AP Course and Exam Description
  • Skill-Building Activities: AP-style multiple-choice questions and free-response prompts
  • Practice and Diagnostics: Periodic checks and practice exams using authorized AP-style materials, released questions, and available College Board resources
  • Targeted Remediation: Supplementary lessons and practice based on demonstrated needs

AP Classroom Access

Students enrolled in Independent Study+ receive AP Classroom access through their Legend course section as part of the academic program. This may include teacher-assigned resources, Topic Questions, Progress Checks, AP Daily videos, and other resources appropriate for the course.

Students who register only for an AP exam at Legend are placed in an exam-only section. Exam-only registration does not include Legend curriculum, grading, teacher support, course credit, or full instructional access through a Legend course section.

FRQ Preparation and Optional Individual Feedback

The program includes recorded instruction on AP free-response formats, scoring expectations, response strategies, and common mistakes. Students also complete AP-style free-response practice as part of their coursework.

Optional Individual FRQ Feedback Add-On

Students may add two private, one-hour sessions focused on applying AP scoring criteria to their own responses:

  1. Diagnostic Session: The teacher reviews an initial timed response and identifies the student’s main improvement priorities.
  2. Follow-Up Session: The teacher reviews a later response, evaluates the student’s application of the strategies, and provides targeted next steps.

The add-on is especially recommended for students who enroll after October 31, have limited experience with AP free-response questions, or need help converting subject knowledge into higher-scoring responses. It may be selected during registration or purchased later, subject to teacher availability.

How the Academic Program Works

  1. Submit the Independent Study+ enrollment form.
  2. Provide the student’s transcript or other prerequisite documentation.
  3. Complete a readiness assessment if required.
  4. Receive course access and a personalized pacing guide.
  5. Complete the curriculum, assignments, assessments, and progress check-ins.
  6. Add individual FRQ coaching or other one-on-one live instruction if needed.
  7. Complete all credit requirements by the published deadline.
  8. Receive a final course grade and transcripted credit after successful completion.

How AP Exam Registration Works

  1. Choose an authorized AP testing location.
  2. Register separately with Legend, the student’s regular school, or another testing school.
  3. Confirm the exam seat directly with the selected testing provider.
  4. Complete all testing-location requirements by its deadlines.
  5. Take the AP exam in May.

The AP exam score and the Legend course grade are separate outcomes. Taking the AP exam does not by itself earn Legend course credit, and completing Independent Study+ does not automatically register the student for an AP exam.

Requirements for Course Credit

Enrollment alone does not guarantee credit or a particular grade. Students must complete the required coursework, assignments, assessments, progress requirements, and final evaluation by the credit-completion deadline. The final course grade is based on demonstrated academic performance and is independent of the AP exam score.

Students are expected to follow their approved pacing guide and respond to teacher or school progress communications. Students whose progress falls substantially behind may need an adjusted plan, additional support, or an administrative review of whether timely completion remains feasible.

Frequently Asked Questions

Must I take the AP exam at Legend?

No. Independent Study+ students may test at Legend, at their regular school, or at another authorized AP testing location. Students are responsible for arranging and confirming their testing location separately.

Does enrolling in Independent Study+ reserve an AP exam seat at Legend?

No. Program enrollment and AP exam registration are separate. A seat at Legend is confirmed only after the separate AP Exam Registration Form and payment have been successfully processed, while space remains available.

What is the difference between exam-only registration and Independent Study+?

Exam-only registration provides an AP exam seat at Legend but does not include Legend curriculum, grading, teacher support, progress monitoring, or course credit. Independent Study+ is an academic course program with these learning and credit components, but it does not include or guarantee an AP exam seat.

Is the AP exam score used as the Legend course grade?

No. The Legend course grade is based on the student’s performance in the course. The AP exam score is reported separately by the College Board.

Does enrollment guarantee transcripted credit?

No. Students must successfully complete all required coursework, assessments, progress requirements, and the final evaluation by the credit-completion deadline.

Are live sessions included?

The base program is asynchronous and includes recorded FRQ-strategy instruction and teacher support. Students may purchase the two-session Individual FRQ Feedback Add-On or additional one-on-one instruction, subject to teacher availability.

Can I enroll after January 31, 2027?

Applications submitted after January 31 are considered only by exception. Approval depends on the student’s readiness, available time, course workload, and the feasibility of completing credit requirements with academic integrity by April 16, 2027.
