Navigating your student’s education plan can be complicated. Your high school students are juggling many activities including, AP classes, sports, clubs, AND tutoring. There are options when it comes to your child’s education, but the challenge is in making the most effective choices that serve your goal. An early start makes the entire course planning process much more manageable.

Here are 4 easy ways to help you choose the right high school courses:

  1. Determine What Your Prerequisites Are

Ask yourself: what’s your student’s goal? Do they need an AP Course to fulfill that? If so, what’s the prerequisite? The faster you finish prerequisites, the earlier you can select the higher-tier courses that make you stand out. Even if you missed the boat and find yourself in the middle of a semester, there are 1:1 courses or online options.

  1. Get Credit Where Credit is Due

If your student has spent ample amounts of time on a subject in tutoring or passion projects, check to see if there’s an available course for credit. If they’re likely to perform well and have a good grade contribute to their transcript/GPA, it’s a great investment which validates your time spent. Do this in Group Class, Online, or Independent Study (inquire for more info)

  1. Be Aware of Your Child’s Interests and Study Habits

Do they prefer morning or evening courses? Are they into math and sciences or would they rather take on a creative path like arts and music? These are great questions to consider so you can position your student for success. The best course planning occurs when a goal is present and is personalized for an individual student. Best yet, this yields future benefits when your student repeats this process for college courses, when so much more is on the line.

  1. Plan Ahead for Summers

Don’t forget to include next summer in your plans. Staying a few steps ahead means preparing for those very steps! Frantically deciding on coursework or finding classes have filled up is an avoidable headache. Having a carefully planned out schedule will ensure that all of your family vacations, trips with friends, and extracurricular summer courses and activities have a place on your busy calendar.
