The college admissions process can be a confusing and daunting process, especially if you are navigating it on your own. I have compiled a checklist with some tips to help you get into the school of your dreams. Whether you are just starting the process or have been thinking about it for a while, I hope some of these tips can help guide your decisions.

 1. Start Applying Early

Some colleges have early action or early decisions. This means you can apply early and get a decision usually in December or January. Definitely look at your list of schools and take advantage of this option if the school has it. However, keep in mind that some colleges will require you to commit if you get in, so be sure to look into it before applying. Also be mindful of application deadlines and stay on top of things because each school is different. You don’t want to fall behind and be left scrambling at the end.

2. Keep Your Options Open

Even though you may have a dream school to attend, you want to also make sure to have a few others as backup. By having a few safety, target, and reach schools, it allows you to keep your options open. A good number to have would be 3-5 schools per category. If you only have 1 choice, you run the risk of not being accepted and adding unnecessary stress on yourself. There is nothing wrong with transferring to your target school after the first or second year.

3. It’s NOT All About Academics

It’s normal for people to think that you need excellent grades to get into your dream school, but that isn’t the only factor to consider. Colleges like to see that you are a well-rounded person in terms of academics and extracurricular activities, like clubs or sports. They are looking to see that you are the whole package and will succeed at their institution. Looking back on my high school days, not only did I have the grades, but I was also in a few clubs, honors societies like CSF (California Scholarship Federation), and took classes out of my comfort-zone like Intro to Theater to round out my course of study. This helped me get accepted into a few schools that I had my eye on, so I had options to choose from.

 4. Pick the “Right Fit” School for You

This is going to be different for everyone. Just because a school is available doesn’t mean it’s the “right fit” for you in terms of academics, campus culture, or values. You need to take everything about the school into consideration before deciding. Some students might thrive better in certain settings, like public or private schools and what each campus has to offer. Scheduling campus tours would be really helpful because you get to experience it for yourself and be sure to have questions ready.

5. Be Authentic

Staying true to who you are will help you get far in life. This means being able to present yourself in a way that comes off as genuine to others. People tend to want to connect with others who are approachable and know what they want. Be honest in your college applications because they will be cross-checking this information and you don’t want to be caught in a sticky situation, which can jeopardize your admissions decision.
