Sharon Brown

Subjects: Science

Sharon graduated from Lincoln University with a BA in Chemistry and Penn State with her PhD in Pharmacology. Sharon chose to join the LCP team because she wanted to share her passion for biology with students at a school that is dedicated to helping its students reach their full potential academically. She describes her style of teaching as a hybrid of many elements. Sharon incorporates her personality into a lecture based on pre-assigned topics, while integrating extra-curricular knowledge. Multimedia presentations are also used to reinforce the key concepts and the more challenging concepts. She tries to engage with her students by asking questions throughout the lecture to keep their minds stimulated.

The best thing about teaching for Sharon is sharing her enthusiasm for and knowledge about the subject matter with the students. She believes one of the most effective motivating factors is building the students’ confidence in their ability to grasp the concepts. Words of affirmation and presenting biology in an understandable, yet engaging fashion are two confidence-builders that Sharon uses in her classes. Making the concepts taught in biology applicable to everyday life is another motivating factor. When students can relate to a course outside of the class context, their desire to want to learn more about it is stimulated, consequently causing them to want to study more.

When she is not teaching, Sharon enjoys spending time with her family, solving a variety of word puzzles, gardening, organizing, and working out.
